Women’s Front: The embodiment of a frenzied Misogynist

4 MIN READMISOGYNY is defined by the Oxford dictionary as “dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women”. It is a word that aptly describes the persona of today’s president PRRD. President Duterte since his ascension to power never hid his hatred for women. Two years from the time he took over the presidency of this country, we are able to compile a number of his infamous statements, inexcusable behaviour and actions that undeniably characterizes him as a “bona fide” misogynist.

A lot is still wanting.

On one hand, is the women sheltered inside the home whose role is to serve the husband and bring about children who would later become his heirs and on the other hand the “liberated” woman illustrated as a sex symbol whose body can be used to sell products or bought with a hefty price more so if she can stimulate and excite the imagination of the male onlookers.

Women’s Front: Understanding discrimination and violence vs women (1/3)

3 MIN READViolence Against Women (VAW) in its different forms are gender-based abuses that target women in particular because of how they are viewed in society. It is one of the most palpable manifestations of women’s unequal status in relation to men in our society. Although VAW is usually perpetrated by males, it must be clear that VAW happens not because of the ridiculous belief that men are naturally violent and aggressive. The problem has its origin in our history, when the subjugation of women emerged in our society. It is systemic and deeply entrenched in the socio-cultural and political systems where both men and women accept the inequalities as realities of life.

Women’s Front: A priority agenda for women farmers

3 MIN READFarming communities in the plains of Kalinga are harvesting and dryin their harvests of commercial rice and Bt corn (genetically modified organism). Harvest season is a time of joy and thanksgiving for farmers. It is a time to account their hard labor. The accounting however is usually painful when farmers are confronted with the reality that their harvest is not good enought to pay what they have already spent during the time that they are waiting for harvest season. An increasing number end up with a negative balance especially if they incurred debt, a chronic cycle in the life of farmers where production costs are high and the price of farmer’s produce is low.

Women’s Front: Flowers for Flora, a tribute

4 MIN READIn Roman mythology, Flora is goddess of flowering plants. Biology says that flora are the plants of a particular region, habitat or geological period. It is part of the work of social scientists to take into account the flora and fauna of a community or a region being important in determining the biological materials that is life-sustaining for the people and that needs to be defended. My grandma, Irene Lubang Kinaud (she went to life eternal in 1995) is one of Flora’s godparents. I wonder if my grandma knew about that as a meaning of Auntie Flora’s name. Those who know the mythological and biological meaning of flora and know Auntie Flora would find the definition very much fitting of Manang Flora’s personality. Flora is full of life. Flora is as pretty as a flower and she is blooming all the time as a person, as a woman, as a mother, of course as a wife to Paul, as a sister, as an aunt, as a friend and a colleague, as a social worker and as an activist.
