Yep, I know, mej nag-cheat ako sa unang sample dahil mas familiar ang ‘Pasan niya ang daigdig’), may enduring sonority at relevance ang “burden” (‘proof of burden,’ ‘the burden of late capital’).
An intertext care of a song, from Shungudzo’s It’s a Good Day (to fight the system), proffering a 180-degree-twist so that the burdens are not always dreaded, can be welcomed, acknowledged.
When one of us is tired out
The other one will hold it down
After this song, I recall “Carry That Weight,” the 2014 performance art by Emma Sulkowicz, then a student at Columbia University. The performance art involves Emma “carrying a 50-pound mattress wherever she goes on campus (but not off campus). Analogies to the Stations of the Cross may come to mind, especially when friends or strangers spontaneously step forward and help her carry her burden, which is both actual and symbolic.” The project alludes to, and protests, the myriad cases of sexual assault against students—including herself—in the university.
In an interview with the Columbia Spectator, Sulkowicz said that “I am not allowed to ask for help in carrying the mattress, but others are allowed to give help if they come up and offer it.” The burden is not just symbolized but made visible by the mattress; as it is walked around the campus, it becomes a material component of a possible encounter that raises questions—what was that woman carrying the mattress about?—and offers help. In that latter scenario, the burden becomes shared, and maybe the larger issue of sexual violence on campus, which prompted Sulkowicz’s piece, gets talked about more.
Carrying the load for others, so they may rest for a while. When they are tired, we can hold down the fort. When someone gets sleepy, another takes their place to keep watch. Lest they get eaten by zombies, if this is a zombie film. Lest they get attacked by wild animals if this is a humans-get-lost-in-a-jungle show. But what happens if there are 18 books to be passed along, and nearly a hundred people in line? What happens is a lovely procession of books protected in “altars,” moving from one place to another, a fitting moving ritual for a local bookshop which, on many occasions before, has occasioned the coming together of strangers, listening to one another during open mics or book launches, dancing with tapuy with their leather jackets and funky long sleeves on.

#nordis.net
