Women call for change |
||
We women often forget how vital our role is in changing the world. A forwarded message says that “The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.(We) bring joy, hope and love.(We) have compassion and ideals.(We) give moral support to our family and friends. Women have vital things to say and everything to give. HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN, IT IS THAT (WE) FORGET OUR WORTH!” Yes, this is so true. We work for almost 18 hours a day, master the art of selflessness by prioritizing everyone in the family during meal time, or budget allocation, etc. Yet, we often forget to pay attention to what we truly feel, think and intend to do. But on the opposite end of women who are bound in traditional roles are women who want to be a relevant part of not just the home but of society as co-creators of history (and herstory). Today, we get mixed reactions from women as the country is enmeshed in a political catastrophe. GMA herself uses the image of ordinary housewives to try to redeem her already sunken image. Some women are apolitical, but many are also active in the pro and anti-GMA camps. One camp which has definitely registered a united women’s voice is the Women’s March or Women’s Movement for Arroyo’s Resignation and Regime Change. This is comprised of a power pack from Bangon Kababaihan, GABRIELA, Ecumenical Women’s Forum, Gabriela Women’s Party, Bangsamoro Women’s Group, representatives from religious sectors, the academe and law practitioners. In a unity statement, the women declared that “as mothers and nurturers of life, we refuse to allow our children to inherit a government that tolerates fraud and corruption, a leadership that breeds poverty, violence and injustice.” Thus, they are unanimous in calling for Arroyo to resign immediately. In a nationally-coordinated activity on July 19, mass actions led by WOMEN’S MARCH were held all over the country, calling for Mrs. Arroyo to step down from office. Definitely, these women have found a different meaning and worth in this society. # |
