Bye, bye Gloria? |

It is not as if the week’s turn of events on that famous audio recording keys in the other missing pieces to President Arroyo’s deception in the 2004 presidential elections. For whatever worth it has, we recognize those who surfaced to testify. Immediately after the elections, progressive organizations and partylists were the first to denounce GMA for the electoral fraud that catapulted her into the highest governing seat in the land. And this was after declaring that she will not run in the 2004 elections. So much for dramatizing a lie in front Jose Rizal’s shrine. But a good lot of the public became even more critical when, events after, we learned that lying is habitual. It was also a long time ago when GMA was accused of using taxpayers’ money for her political ambitions. Corruption seems to be the trade name of this administration, and it seems to even in the First Family. The Promotion for Church People’s Response (PCPR) was right when it said GMA has lost her moral ascendancy to rule the nation. In fact, she lost it a long time ago. And while she fed her ambitions, farmers remained landless, workers deprived of just wages, and benefits, and human rights violations just kept mounting. The illegitimate president has become unpopular and infamous. She earned it. Some say that the call to oust the president is immature, and that Sen. Aquilino Pimentel’s call for the president to resign seems to be laden with personal interest. But the crux of the matter is that we are experiencing this crisis precisely because of an illegitimate president feeding the wiles of foreigners while pursuing, her and her clique’s interests. Others also claim that people power will not work this time because of people power fatigue. But it is also unlikely that GMA will resign without pressure from the masses, not just blocs from Left to Right. For the charges at hand, she could be unseated by impeachment. The only thing that will save her now is her unconditional allegiance to foreign powers, the US’ especially. That is why, more than ever, the Filipino people will not tire of launching mass actions to condemn these injustices. Nor will the progressive groups tire of politicizing the Filipino people. More than ever, GMA has shown her incapacity to govern. The tables have turned. We have had enough of a fraudulent president. The Filipino people only deserve better. # |
