BAGUIO CITY (June 23) — Baguio residents without established businesses in the city can register as vendors in the flea or night market once the city council finally approves the proposal for the operation of flea markets and night markets in spaces and roads within the central business district. Last week the council approved on first reading the proposed ordinance and referred it to appropriate council committee. The proposal was co-authored by Councilors Galo Weygan, Daniel Farinas, Faustino Olowan and Leandro Yangot, Jr., based on 2004 Resolution 244, which recommended an experimental night market to assist displaced vendors. Among streets proposed for the night and flea markets are Harrison road, Upper Kayang, Tabora Park from 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. for flea market and 7:00 P.M. to 12:00 midnight for night market. Other suitable places may also be designated in the future for the same purpose. There will be no space or booth rental but a daily P50 market fee shall be collected for flea markets, for daytime selling of goods or general merchandise. For night markets, no permanent structure shall be built on the assigned areas because these are areas intended for other purposes during daytime. The proposed ordinance also allows only Baguio products such as woven materials, handicraft, indigenous products, preserved fruits and vegetables, gift items, tourist items and other general small merchandise in the special markets. The proposal emphasized that stringent measures should be observed by participants of the night market as to sanitation, public order and general cleanliness. # Julie G.
