Mountain Province mayor nabbed for extortion

BAGUIO CITY (June 16) — For forcing a drug firm to shell out 15 percent “commission” from his town’s medicine supply deal, a town mayor is now facing robbery, extortion and anti-corruption raps that may send him to jail.

Barlig, Mountain Province Mayor Crispin Fias-iloy who refuses to air his side on the allegations to journalists was led to the prosecutor’s office here Friday afternoon after National Bureau of Investigation-Cordillera (NBI-CAR) operatives led by lawyer Darwin Lising caught him red-handed receiving marked money supposedly as his “payola” on his town’s medical supply deal.

According to Anthony Postes, a medical representative of the Blessed Safe John pharmaceutical firm based in Baguio City, Fias-iloy insisted for his 15 percent “commission” from a P302,748-worth medical supply deal of Barlig town and his firm.

Agents of the NBI-CAR said Fias-iloy demanded P45,000.00 from Portes who offered only P10,000.00 for the done deal of medical supply at the Barlig District Hospital.

Portes narrated that the mayor’s nagging began when the medical supply firm intended to collect payment for the more than P300,000 deal. 

Legally won by the said pharmaceutical company in a bidding last March, the supply was delivered by the firm in April.  The company began demanding for the payment after that but on June 9 when the check for the payment was ready,  Fias-iloy told the agent to meet him in Bontoc, Mountain Province’s capital town to get the check.

In Bontoc, Mayor Fias-iloy demanded a 15 percent “commission” that prompted Portes to seek DILG intervention. The case was referred to the NBI-CAR which eventually conducted an operation.
