TAGUDIN, Ilocos Sur (May 26) — Although lamenting the fate of their townmate Guen Aguilar, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) convicted last week in Singapore for allegedly killing another Filipina, Jane La Puebla, Tagudinians are still happy Aguilar will not be hanged. Tagudin Mayor Roque Verzosa, Jr., Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson and Aguilar’s husband Edwin flew to Singapore to attend the sentencing of the domestic helper last May 18. Aguilar, according to Singaporean authorities dismembered Filipina domestic La Puebla on September 2005 on disagreement on a loan. A Singapore psychologist said Aguilar might have suffered from severe depression. The pressure from Tagudin, Verzosa said, might have softened the court a bit to render a lesser penalty. He also said that there is a continuing support to Aguilar’s family who recently received P150,000 from Governor Singson for her two children’s schooling. Her husband was also given a job. # Ace Alegre for NORDIS Post your comments, reactions to this article |
