KMU-Cordi welcomes DOLE Sec resignation

BAGUIO CITY (June 1) — The militant workers under the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU)-Cordillera welcomed the impending resignation of Labor Secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas, adding that such resignation would be a gift to thousands of workers in the country. The group added that her resignation is long overdue.

KMU-Cordillera Spokesperson James Tulipa said that workers from different labor unions and organizations have long been calling for her resignation because of her anti-labor and anti-poor attitude.

Tulipa however, stressed that Sto. Tomas’ resignation will not cure the damages her pro-capitalist decisions had inflicted to the workers and their families. He said Sto. Tomas is responsible and accountable for the harassments and killings of workers fighting for their rights and welfare.

“Many workers including their families and supporters were injured and murdered by the police and military because of her (Sto. Tomas) issuance of Assumptions of Jurisdiction (AJ) over the legitimate struggles such as lockouts and strikes of workers,” said Tulipa.

KMU-Cordillera Public Information Officer Leonida Tundagui added that workers’ rights and welfare will continue to be violated as long as the anti-worker policies of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will not change. She said who ever will take over Sto. Tomas position will be implementing the same policies and positions.

Meanwhile, Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran criticized Sto. Tomas’ reason for her resignation.

“If she thinks she’s stressed out, we can only imagine the state of health, minds and welfare of the workers whose rights she has violated by signing all those various memoranda, department orders and case decisions. How many workers have lost not only their jobs but their lives because of her?” Beltran stressed. # Aldwin Quitasol for NORDIS
