Postcard to free Beltran launched |

BAGUIO CITY (May 25) — Anakpawis Partylist-Cordillera demanded the immediate release of Anakpawis Rep. Crispin “Ka Bel” Beltran and the immediate ouster of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) as it gathered members and advocates on May 25 at People’s Park here in a short program that launched a nationally coordinated postcard signing for Beltran’s release. May 25 marks the third month of Beltran’s illegal arrest and detention. “We condemn the GMA administration for ignoring the resounding call of various groups (for Beltran’s freedom) and the release order issued by the Quezon City Municipal Trial Court. Once again we assert Ka Bel’s immediate release and demand the ouster of a fascist, fake and puppet president,” Anakpawis-Metro Baguio Coordinator Ignacio Pangket said. Pangket added that the said postcards signed all over the country will be sent to the United Nations Human Rights Commission to expose the GMA administration’s grave violation of civil liberties. Jerry Diano, secretary-general of Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston) further said that there was no basis for Beltran’s arrest saying that all he did was to advance the welfare and fight for the rights of the toiling masses. He also criticized the impending arrest of Bayan Muna Representatives Satur Ocampo, Joel Virador and Teddy Casiño; Anakpawis Rep. Rafael Mariano and Gabriela Party List Rep. Liza Maza collectively referred to as the Batasan 5. Diano said Beltran is among the representatives who persisted for a legislated wage increase. He added that Beltran also co-authored Congress resolutions addressing the needs of the masses. Likewise, Secretary-general Mila Lingbawan of the Alyansa dagiti Pesante iti Taeng Kordilyera (Apit Tako), the regional alliance of peasants in the Cordillera criticized the GMA administration for the relentless political assassination of militant leaders and members. “We know that the illegal arrest, abduction, torture and murder of militant leaders are meant to quell our movement and constrict our democratic space. But, we will not be cowed. While we demand for the immediate release of Ka Bel, we will continue to assert and fight for our democratic rights and civil liberties,” stressed Chie Galvez of the Tongtongan ti Umili-Cordillera Peoples Alliance (TTU-CPA). # Kim Quitasol for NORDIS Post your comments, reactions to this article |
