Gov’t workers hit GSIS, GMA for anti-employee policies

BAGUIO CITY (May 17) — Government union and association leaders expressed their discontent over the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) management for its anti-employee policies and to the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo administration for not listening to their calls.

In a forum here last May 16, on the updates on the problems caused by new policies Confederation for Unity, Recognition and Advancement of Government Employees (Courage) members and other government employees also recognized the need for all members to be informed and mobilized for their voices to be heard.

“GSIS management spent millions in public relations (PR) funds in its attempt to clear all the criticisms at them due to anomalous transfer of funds and dubious transactions,” Courage Coordinator Cez Peta said.

Peta added that with the current situation of GSIS, the wider membership especially those in the interiors must be informed about policy changes.

Kapisanan ng mga Manggagawa sa GSIS (KMG) President Atty. Albert Velasco hit the allotment of large amount for PR funds. He said that P33 million was allotted in 2001, P77million in 2003 and P144million in 2004. He asserted that there is no need for a PR fund for GSIS, since its market is already provided for under the law.

Velasco also criticized the change in survivorship benefits. He said that before the length of service required is a minimum of three years, the new policy requires at least 15 years.

Moreover, Velasco stressed that while benefits and claims of members are being reduced, GSIS is diverting funds to unbeneficial projects. He hit the GSIS computerization program worth seven million pesos that has not improved GSIS service. He stressed that many members complain of errors in the database.

Velasco further criticized GSIS management for giving P2 billion dividend share to Malacañang while the optional dividend shares of members are delayed for almost a year. # Kim Quitasol for NORDIS
