BAGUIO CITY (Mar. 31) — Sixty percent (60%) of the survey respondents in La Union claimed they are not in favor of Presidential Proclamation 1017; nineteen percent (19%) said they are in favor; and twenty one percent (21%) had no comment. This came out from the random “opinion survey” of Northern Media and Information Network’s Idaw Databank and Archives Organization (IDAO) last March 18-24 in the municipalities of Naguillan, Bauang, Pugo and Santol in La Union.

When asked if they agree that Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s declaration of the “state of national emergency” is similar to the declaration of martial law or “iron-fisted” repression of the opposition, control of mass media, violation of rights and perpetuation of stay in power, 52% said they agree; 41% - do not agree; 2% - do not know; and 2% -no answer. Seventy-one percent of the respondents were aware of PP1017 while 26% are unaware and only 2% had no comment.

After the national newspaper The Daily Tribune was raided, 61% of the respondents said greater control or censorship of mass media by the administration is not justified; 29% said it is justified; 5% said they do not know; and 5% had no answer.

Ninety-one percent of the respondents want GMA to be removed from her position as the country’s president; 7% wants her to stay; while 2% had no answer. According to them, poverty is the main reason they want GMA to be removed in Malacañang, 60% said their income is not enough for the needs of their families; 31% said it is enough; while 4% had no comment.

Meanwhile, 83% of the respondents believe that the economy will not improve while GMA is in power. # Joel A. Capulong with reports from Angela Ann Malicdem for NORDIS
