Cagayan women observe Women’s Day

ILAGAN, Isabela (Mar. 16) — Around 1,500 women from different groups and sectors in the province of Isabela celebrated International Women’s Day last March 11 with songs, dances, lecture and protests.

Participants included the Catholic Women’s League, Ilagan Diocesan Social Action Center-Women’s Desk, Mother Butlers, and Girl Scouts of the Philippines, Department of Social Welfare Development (DSWD)-Isabela, Provincial Health Office-Isabela and DSWD-Benito Soliven. Students and teachers of the Isabela National High School, Ilagan, Cauayan and Echague campuses of the Isabela State University (ISU), daycare workers across the province and Isabela Provincial Capitol employees also joined the said activities.

Gabriela, Amihan and other organizations under the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN)-Cagayan Valley such as the peasant federation DAGAMI and League of Filipino Students registered the strongest call against poverty and state-engineered attacks on militant groups and individuals. The groups reiterated their clamor for the immediate removal of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from power.

The day’s affair begun with cultural presentations and speeches followed by a march and a Women’s Day mass. In the afternoon, a lecture about the present women’s situation in the Philippines attended by Gov. Grace Padaca took place. The program ended at 5 P.M.

The unity forged among the various groups is a huge leap for the women’s movement of Cagayan Valley in its continuing struggle for the genuine emancipation of half of humanity from all forms of oppression. # via NORDIS
