Marky: Pride of the Igorots

By FLORENCE BATAWANG, UP Baguio Intern for Nordis

Truly, many Igorots have proven that they can be the best in their respective fields and Marky Cielo is one of them.

Mark Angelo “Marky” Cadaweng Cielo is a mistizo Kankanaey, who emerged as the first sole survivor of Starstruck 3, a nationwide talent search.

Marky, is of the Bauko-Sabangan and probably Besao lineage.

However, he is born in Butuan City, Agusan del Sur. His father, Avelino Cielo is from Iligan City. His mother, Mildred Cadaweng is from Sinto, Bauko, Mountain Province.

Marky studied and finished his grade school in Butuan City. He transferred to San Isidro High School at Buguias, Benguet, in 2001. After high school, he enrolled at Saint Louis University for college.

The people have spoken

Many Filipinos believe Marky had exceptional talent as shown in the text votes he got. Reviews of him published in national newspapers and the internet prove that even the showbiz world believe he has what it takes to be a star.

In fact even Louie Ignacio, a movie director said on national television that Marky might replace Mark Herras, the ultimate survivor of Starstruck 1 as the “Bad Boy ng Dance Floor”.

Victory for all

Marky’s triumph made the Kaigorotan proud. His victory once again prove that Igorots just like any other ethnic group also possess exceptional talents. It has also shown the solidarity of the Kaigorotan as they supported him all the way.

Paulo Pagteilan, Mountain Province provincial administrator revealed that even government officials of the province campaigned for Marky.

Pagilan added that Marky’s win refuted Bugz Daigo’s (one of the survivors) earlier statement that he (Marky) would lose because he is an Igorot.

The homecoming

Marky will soon come home to Mountain Province and join his town mates celebrate the Lang-ay Festival this first week of April.

Pagteilan disclosed the GMA7 Network had confirmed Marky’s appearance on the said festivity. He said Marky would be in a musical show in the evening of April 7 and will join the street dancing with the Bauko delegates.

Department of Tourism (DOT)-Cordillera Director Pura Molintas said Marky would be one of endorsers of tourism in the region.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of MP expressed same commendation as they passed a resolution naming him the ambassador of Mountain Province for Tourism. #
