Belgian gov’t visit Cordillera partners

BAGUIO CITY (Mar. 15) — Four Belgian government officials headed by Deputy Van Der Meiren from the Province of East Flanders visited their partners and projects in the Cordillera from February 20 to 26.

The delegation visited the footbridge in Lacub, Abra; the people’s clinic at the premises of the Community Health Education Services and Training in the Cordillera Region (Chestcore) office; footpath in Happy Hollow, Baguio City; and the Appropriate Technology Workshop of the Center for Development Programs in the Cordillera (CDPC), a network of non-government organizations (NGO).

Community folk the Belgians visited stressed the importance of continuous organizing and training to insure the capability of people’s organization and the viability of projects. Representatives from the people’s organizations and municipal officials presented the need for continuing support.

The Belgian delegation appreciated the barrio level exposures and interaction. They said they sympathize with the Filipinos on the state development in the country, especially the poor state of education, health, basic infrastructures, and the need to increase food production or engage in other livelihood options.

Presidential Assistant for the Cordillera Administrative Region Thomas Killip, appraised the delegation on the development situation in the Cordillera and the cooperation of NGOs, people’s organizations like CDPC and the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA) with government in addressing the development needs of the region.

Baguio City Mayor Braulio Yaranon, Benguet Governor Borromeo Melchor, and Abra Governor Vic Sid Valera are among the local government officials the Belgians visited.

Staff of New World, a Belgian NGO that facilitates solidarity between Belgium and the Philippines, accompanied the Belgian officials. The province of East Flanders and New World have been in partnership for more than ten years with CDPC and CPA, a regional federation of people’s organizations.

A cultural evening where the delegation gamely joined in the pattong, a Cordillera community dance capped the one week partnership visit. Representatives of the Belgian delegation as well as of CDPC and CPA expressed satisfaction on the visit with prospects for building a stronger partnership and solidarity. # via NORDIS
