IPs hold conference vs. corporate mining

BAGUIO CITY (Mar. 11) — The Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA) will host a national indigenous peoples’ (IP) conference on mining this week from March 12 to 14 at the La Consolacion Villa, Woodsgate Subd., Camp 7 here.

According to Joan Carling, CPA chairperson, the conference aims to gather various non-government organizations, IP organizations and individuals to strengthen advocacy against corporate mining and to sustain the call to repeal the Mining Act of 1995.

During the conference, several spokespersons of indigenous communities will share actual experiences of conflict with mining companies, which is co-organized by the Philippine Misereor Partners (PMP). Moreover, the indigenous peoples will confirm the stones of environmental hazards and violations of their human rights recounted by their support groups.

Jaybee Garganera, one of the conveners of the said conference and national coordinator of Alyansa Tigil Mina, said, “Large-scale mining is at the heart of every threat to the security and development of indigenous cultural communities.” He reported that indigenous peoples in the Philippines suffer cultural displacement economic marginalization and serious human rights violations due to these mining activities.

“Many communities resist being pressured into development projects which destroy their cultural values,” Garganera added. “We hope this IP conference will further strengthen their resolve to pursue their rightful assertion of their cultural and ancestral domains.”

Communities and environmental advocates informed media that they will continue to criticize the liberalization of the mining industry until alternative provisions are implemented to safeguard human rights and conserve the environment.

“We later hope to gain everyone’s support for our campaign since this is an issue that affects not just the bearers of our traditional cultures but all Filipinos,” said Garganera.

The mining conference steering committee is composed of PHILDRRA, Legal Rights Center-Kasama sa Kalikasan, AnthroWatch, Kasapi, Haribon, Forum for Philippine Environment, Assisi Foundation, and the CPA. # via NORDIS
