UPB students get a taste of radio & public relations

BAGUIO CITY (Feb. 13) — A speech communication class of the University of the Philippines Baguio (UPB) conducted a back-to-back fora on radio and public relations (PR) on February 13. The said events are part of the series of fora and discussions organized by the Speech Communication 137 (Group Discussion and Conference) students as part of the class requirement.

According to Stephanie Rabia, a UPB instructor, the series of fora were organized to prepare the UPB communication students in the real world of radio and public relations. Moreover, to equip the students with proper knowledge on what to do and how to engage with things related to the said fields in the future.

Meanwhile, Derrick Carreon, station manager of 95.9 Big FM tackled various ethical issues in radio, and Dennis Guttierez, station manager of 92.7 Campus Radio FM discussed radio broadcasting as a profession.

Mari-ann Santos, a PR practitioner and a UPB junior faculty, lectured on public relations’ world and all the functions, processes, and issues involved in the said line of job. Santos shared that “public relations is the management communication between an organization and its publics,” as quoted in the book ‘Managing Public Relations’ by Grunig Ang Hunt.

Other discussions to be organized by the class for another series of fora include advertising and journalism. # Keith Sison / UP Intern for NORDIS
