Abra people’s organization holds general assembly, elects officers

MALIBCONG, Abra (Feb. 3) — The district-wide people’s organization Takderan Aywanan ti Daga, Ekolohiya ken Kultura (Tadek) held its 3rd general assembly on January 15 at Brgy. Buanao. Over 100 delegates from the villages of Lat-ey, Buanao, Adugao, Umnap and Cob-coba attended the assembly.

After the organizational assessments, the group reviewed its general program of action and integrated necessary action plans. The group also elected its new executive council.

The new set of officers includes Constantino Latawan as chairperson, Severino Bulaay as vice chairperson, Corason Apaling as general secretary, Melba Sagaok as finance officer and Nestor Brillantes as press relations officer. Representatives from each barangay were also elected.

During the activity, the Cordillera Peoples Alliance’s (CPA) Education Committee gave inputs on the national and Cordillera situations.

Tribal elder Ama Sannadan and other community elders, encouraged the new set of officers to defend their ancestral land from foreign domination and destruction. Since 1999, the elders of Bangilo have been playing an integral part in the organization.

Since its establishment in 1999, Tadek conducted educational discussions and trainings with the assistance of CPA’s member organizations. It also passed a resolution to the municipal council requesting for a hunting schedule (panaglasag) for the people of Bangilo, which was eventually granted.

One of the most significant accomplishments of Tadek is the officials’ and members’ collective effort to maintain and strengthen the organization despite limitations, such as finances.

Tadek hosted the 21st Cordillera Day celebrations in Buanao in April last year, with over 5,000 participants, including those from other regions and abroad. This activity has been a significant achievement for Tadek.
