Baguioites required to plant fruit-bearing trees

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 27) – Residents here are now required to plant fruit-bearing trees in their backyards in support of the environmental campaign. The city council last Monday approved on final reading an ordinance proposed by Councilor Erdolfo Balajadia for this purpose.

“Our forest reserves are dwindling at an alarming rate. The city is crammed with structures, leaving no viable space for planting.. Hence this, ordinance,” proponent Councilor Balajadia noted.

The residents will be required to plant fruit-bearing trees “within or at the frontage of the building or residence or along the streets fronting such residence.”

In the absence of such available space, residents will be asked to plant in the following areas: within 20 meters of the sidewalk or public space within the barangays; along residual forest areas; areas of high bio-diversity or in public open spaces specially in residential and commercial areas.

A P200,000 appropriation will be allocated annually for the procurement and propagation of the seedlings needed for the project. # Aileen P. Refuerzo/PIO

Claravall assumes YMCA Baguio leadership

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 27) – Regional Trial Court Judge Edilberto Claravall Saturday (Jan. 28) formally took over the reins of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Baguio with a pledge of an enhanced leadership to sustain the youth institution’s present developmental momentum.

Claravall succeeded prominent optometrist Dr. Ricardo Balajadia who for several years ably steered the youth institution into becoming one of the most active YMCA chapters in the country today.

He said that one of the highlights of his administration will be the harnessing of the potentials of the youth to fulfill YMCA’s mission of youth development.

Claravall said he hopes to accomplish all the programs and projects lined up with the support of the members of the board who come from the various fields of specialization.  He said that coupled with these support systems, he will also rely on the rich experience and wisdom of Balajadia and other former YMCA leaders in his steering the organization. # Aileen P. DENR lot verification starts

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 27) – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Cordillera (DENR-CAR) is verifying the status of public lot applications that cover lots within government reservations and areas identified for the city government and barangay needs. The six-month suspension on the lot applications imposed by the DENR on September 8 last year is about to end.

The suspension is for review of questionable lot applications after the city complained on indiscriminate approval of public land applications.

Mayor Braulio Yaranon said verification activities are focused on the townsite and miscellaneous sales applications over lots within the Forbes Park reservation along South Drive, Sto. Tomas, Government Center and other critical and protected areas.

Also being reviewed are overlapping applications covering lots that have been identified for the needs of the city and the barangays.

DENR regional director Penafiel said they have finished reviewing at least half of approximately 21,000 pending lot applications. Applications overlapping the city government reservations will be closely looked into. Lot applications meant for public needs are given priority.

Moreover, DENR aims to review existing procedures, rules and regulations on the processing of townsite applications. # Aileen P. Refuerzo/PIO
