Apayao reports most malaria cases |
||
BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 26) — Despite the massive anti-malaria program of the Department of Health-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOH-CAR), Apayao registered the most malaria cases nationwide. The Apayao regional health unit (RHU) report showed that malaria cases during the rainy season ranges from 100 to 200 with approximately 10 hospital admissions a day during the same period. According to DOH-CAR Director Myrna Cabotaje, Apayao residents are well-informed about malaria prevention and treatment, but they are not keen on following proper medication and preventive measures. Cabotaje said the Apayao RHU has done massive information campaign on malaria prevention, and barangay health centers are equipped with malaria first-time treatment kits. She added that the said RHU even distributed insecticide-treated mosquito nets to residents. She added that change in weather and the environment are major factors in the spread of malaria. Meanwhile, Cabotaje mentioned that DOH is planning to declare Benguet as malaria-free area. She said that for the past seven years there were no reported indigenous cases of malaria from the area. She clarified that indigenous cases are those originating from the place. Cabotaje said the DOH-CAR is still monitoring the Benguet area pending the formal declaration. # Kimberlie Olmaya Ngabit- Quitasol for NORDIS Post your comments, reactions to this article |
