Rights discussions cap TSAT Day

TADIAN, Mountain Province (Jan. 26) — Two symposia, one on basic human rights and the other on the situation of teachers, gave meaning to the 43rd foundation day of the Tadian School of Arts and Trades (TSAT) on January 23.

With the theme “For every right we enjoy is a duty to perform”, the whole-day affair started with the anti-meningococcemia vaccination program for all students and teachers as coordinated with the rural health unit in the locality.

The Human Rights Symposium gathered 300 students and 30 teachers at the quadrangle. Jude Baggo, deputy secretary-general of the Cordillera Human Rights Alliance (CHRA) talked on Basic Human Rights Orientation and the Human Rights Situation in the country.

Baggo capped with the challenge that knowing our rights is the first step in defending and fighting for these rights.

In the same way, Emerita Marrero of the Cordillera Peoples Alliance-Mountain Province (CPA-MP) challenged the audience by saying, “We should not stop by simply knowing our rights. It should be transformed into unified aspirations with collective actions.”

In the afternoon, while the students enjoyed their parlor games, teachers convened at the library for the discussion on the teachers’ situation. The relayed updates on their recent issues like the back cost of living allowance (COLA) and P3,000 Across-the-Board salary increase campaign. They invited Connie Sulang, coordinator of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) – Metro Baguio for the discussion.

Other issues like the persisting problems and irregularities in the Government Service and Insurance System (GSIS) were also raised and tackled during the open forum.

After the discussion, the teachers resolved to join the campaigns for the immediate payment of the back COLA which was illegally abolished in 1989 during the Salary Standardization Law; granting of the P3,000 across-the-board salary increase; and legislation of higher budget for education.

According to Gary Dulag, president of the Tadian Teachers and Employees Association (TTEA), this year’s celebration is a meaningful one compared to the previous celebrations. It has provided a venue for both teachers and students to be aware of their rights and encouraged them to advance their welfare. # via NORDIS
