Vigan longganisa festival gets local execs’ support

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 27) – After the successful 5th longganisa (sausage) festival on Sunday, January 22 the local government of Vigan, Ilocos Sur came out with a concrete project to support the local longganisa producers. The local government extended financial support for new packaging of longganisa for its marketability nationally and internationally.

Approximately 20,000 people attended the festival with several activities including the street dancing, which featured the Vigan longganisa. The unified effort of local government officials and the residents, including schoolchildren from La Union and the Ilocos provinces made the said festival a success.

Mayor Ferdinand Medina said in an interview that the local government already launched the longganisa packaging project allocating funds from the one-town, one product (OTOP) and local government.

“Its (Vigan longanisa) packaging must be improved like that of corporate sausage on sale in the different malls in the country and even abroad,” he explains.

He added that the Vigan longganisa would also contain the quality seal of the city to distinguish it from fake Vigan longganisa. This is a response to complaints from Vigan longanisa lovers that faked longanisa are sold as far as Metro Manila.

The mayor added that the quality seal ensures a better and healthy product because it would undergo the requisites mandated by the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) and the regular sanitary inspection.

Just a week after the festival, at least six producers have availed for the said project. In fact, the mayor claimed, that two from the six already adopted the new longganisa packaging.

Just last week, the mayor shared that a customer already ordered 300 dozens of Vigan longganisa with the new packaging style.

Local residents and Vigan longganisa lovers say it is unique from other Ilocos produced longganisa due to its Ilocano vinegar and native garlic mix. # Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS
