GMA isolated in Benguet, Ifugao — IBON survey

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 25) — After a series of surveys conducted by Ibon Foundation, Inc. and Idaw Databank and Archives Organization (IDAO) – Northern Media and Information Network (NMIN), it was clear that Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) remains isolated in Benguet and Ifugao.

In a random survey in Benguet and Ifugao, 58% of the respondents said they want GMA replaced as president, 15% were not in favor of her removal, and 27% of them are still undecided.

GMA’s isolation from the masses was due to the present crises under her administration. Fifty percent (50%) of respondents in the said provinces believe that the county’s economy is getting worse as compared to 2004, 42% said nothing has changed and only 8% said it is getting better.

When asked about their livelihood in the year 2005 as compared to 2004, 58% of respondents claimed it is getting worse whereas 8% believe they are in better condition and 27% said nothing has changed. This is due to lack of livelihood, job opportunities and low salary, according to the respondents. Survey results also indicated that 62% of the respondents receive low salary, which is not enough to cope with the continuing increase of prices of basic commodities; 19% claim they are satisfied while no one said it is more than enough.

In the July 2005 Northern Luzon survey, 72% of the respondents said they want GMA to step down from her presidency, a very close margin to the October survey result, which is 71%. # Joel A. Capulong with reports from Bryan Balolong, Carole Jean Cupag and Isagani Libongen for NORDIS
