Benguet governor recalls Asin road closure

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Jan. 20) — Governor Borromeo Melchor here issued a recall order last Mondy not to close the City Limit-Asin Proper-San Pascual provincial road after giving the go signal for its closure last week.

The supposed closure of the road this January 23 to April 12 is to give way to the construction of the Irisan Bridge at Tadiangan, Tuba. This is also to give respect to the memorandum of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) directing all governors of Cordillera to fast track the completion of all bridges funded by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Earlier, resort owners, local officials and residents of Nangalisan asked the Benguet provincial government to delay the construction of the Irisan Bridge, which leads to Asin Hot Springs, saying it would cause transportation problem and adversely affect the tourism, agriculture and education sectors in the area.

According to Winnie Golingab, former board member and aspiring to be a special assistant to the governor, the governor in considering the clamor of the concerned people conceded to the proposal of the Provincial Engineers’ Office to construct a diversion road rather than closing it.

The diversion road costs approximately P900,000, which will come from the provincial government fund.

the Anduyan Road, a detour road from Baguio entering San Pascual then leading to Nangalisan and Tadiangan can be used as an alternate route. However, the governor rejected the said proposal saying residents will suffer more transportation time and fee.

Golingab also added that resort owners and residents passed a petition to the governor’s office as well as to the DILG, which pushed for the deferment.

He further said that they are still inviting contractors who have the appropriate equipment to construct the diversion road. The said road should be finished in two months. The construction of the said bridge will push through after the diversion road will be finished, Golingab assured the public. # Florence Batawang/ UP Intern for NORDIS
