La Union residents upset with GMA

SAN FERNANDO, La Union (Jan. 21) — The people of La Union have lost hope that the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) administration could resolve the present political and economic crisis confronting the country today as shown in the IBON Foundation Inc.’s survey covering the municipalities of Bangar, Sudipen, San Gabriel and Luna.

According to the political and economic survey conducted on January 6 by IBON, in coordination with Northern Media and Information Network’s Idaw Databank and Archive Organization (IDAO), 71% of La Union respondents believed that GMA cheated in the 2004 elections and at the same time, is involved in severe corruption, 4.5% believe that only her involvement in corruption is true, 11.3% with her election fraud. On the other hand, a marginalized 2.3% of the respondents believe that both the election fraud and the corruption are not true. Nine percent are not sure whether or not the accusations are true.

What’s more, of the 44 La Union-based respondents, 39% think that the coming out of the infamous former Comelec Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano still wouldn’t bring about the truth regarding the election fraud. Some 32% answered that Garcillano is the “truth bearer”, 23% are undecided and nine percent had nothing to say. Of all the respondents, 72.3% wants her to be removed from her seat, while 4.5% believe that GMA need not to be ousted because such thing will not make any difference and 21% remain undecided. Majority of the respondents prefer GMA to resign rather than resorting to another people power movement. They also believe corruption is rampant in government.

One respondent said it is useless for Filipinos to continue waiting and hoping for actions from the present administration because nothing will happen. The respondent added that most Filipinos resort to finding their own means to live. Some engage in illegal and criminal activities to survive, as manifested by increasing reports on robberies and hold-ups and other crimes against property.

Moreover, the respondents claimed that GMA failed to address unemployment, underemployment and meager wages pushing Filipinos to seek their own employment abroad or result to illegal activities. They also said that GMA only excels in her out-of-the-country affairs.

The survey further revealed that 39% of La Union people said their lives worsened in 2005, 43% claimed their lot has not progressed at all; and 11.4% claimed their lives rose up. About the economy, 50% of the respondents think that the Philippine economy continuously dropped in 2005; 43% think that it remains the same and five percent are ambivalent.

In addition, 66% said that GMA’s pet tax revenue project, the expanded value added tax (E-VAT), has greatly affected their lives through the relentless of prices of basic commodities.

Furthermore, 36% believed that amending the Philippine Constitution would not improve the country’s economy. They foresee that the charter change (cha-cha) is likely to bring more threats to the country such as the encroachment of foreign investors in our lands and its natural resources. 11% said “yes” to the amendment citing light that maybe it is the answer to the age old crisis of the Philippines. Another 43% had nothing to say because they do not know what the amendments constitute.

Thirty two percent, still think that the Anti-Terrorism Bill is important while 16% see that there is no need for this. On the other hand, 30% of the respondents are not even aware that such proposal exists.

Meanwhile in the latest IBON nationwide survey, GMA recorded a net satisfaction rating of -75%. Of the 1331 respondents, only 7.9% said her performance was “satisfactory” while 82.8% said it was “unsatisfactory”, thus the negative satisfactory rating.

The said survey was conducted from January 1 to 11, with 1,331 respondents from various sectors. The survey used a multi-stage probability-sampling scheme with a margin of error of plus or minus three percent. # Ge-Ann Malicdem and Jhunjhun Guillermo for NORDIS
