GSIS under fire

For violation of plan conditions

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 13) — The regional office of the Government Service Insurance Service-Cordillera Administrative Region (GSIS-CAR) could not offer any explanation on the plan holders’ complaints on the violations of the terms of contracts for its memorial service (Genesis Plus) and educational plans (Edu-Child).

A source from GSIS-CAR said the regional office has not received any advisory from the central office on said issues; hence, could not offer explanations to the plan holders here. The source also said even GSIS-CAR employees who availed of the plans are in a quandary.

GSIS tied up with Paz Memorial Services, Inc. and Prudential Life Plans to be its marketing arm for the memorial services and educational plans respectively.

An employee of the city public information office said she could not make use of the educational plan for her son even if the said plan is fully paid.

“What we know is that as of this time, Edu-Child plan holders will yet have to shoulder the tuition of their beneficiaries then GSIS will reimburse it later on,” said Virna Falsis of Prudential Life Plans.

She said the contract of the insurance service agency with Prudential Life Plans for the nationwide marketing of the educational plan ended in 1998, but the marketing share of the pre-need company has not been fully paid yet.

Several plan holders of the memorial service plan are also complaining because the benefits promised in the terms and conditions are not being followed.

Assistant City Accountant Almaya Adawe said she was advised by GSIS-CAR to continue deducting plan contributions from salaries of plan holders because stopping it means termination of the policy.

“Lugi dito ang mga plan holders kung kakailanganin nila ang services ngayon. Hindi natin alam kung kailan ma-aayos ang gusot ng GSIS at ng kanyang mga marketing arms,” (It would be unfair for the plan holders if they need to use their services now. We don’t know when GSIS and its marketing arms can fix the problem.) Adawe said.

Adawe said GSIS should come up with media advisories to inform the public, specially the plan holders of the real situation. # Art Killip/PIO
