Baguio-Benguet teachers upgrade skills

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Jan. 13) — More than 100 practicing teachers in the different schools in Baguio City and Benguet Province participated in a seminar that aimed to enhance their teaching styles in the classrooms. The seminar entitled “Enhancing teaching through productive pedagogies” was held at the CTE Function Hall of the Benguet State University (BSU) on January 9 to 10.

With the participant-teachers mostly from the tertiary level, the seminar actually developed and introduced methodologies to be utilized by these practicing teachers, claimed the organizers in sharing the seminar objectives. Invited speakers are recognized in the field of teaching styles.

Dr. Nilda Sunga, chair of the Department of Languages of the Philippine Normal University, shared the techniques in action teaching and the art of questioning as a method of encouraging students’ participation in the classroom.

“Action teaching is based on the same philosophy of learning: the students participate not only in the lesson materials and classroom practices which have been set up for them, but also in what, when, why and how they learn,” added Sunga.

Traditionally, a teacher demonstrates the processes, owns the knowledge, measure students’ approximations and directs the learning but action teaching breaks this cycle, Sunga added. She notes “students should be taught about thinking critically, independent learning, constructing an argument based on a personal position, and the need for conducting original research.”

She however commented that despite the development of the teaching styles, we have the limitation on our educational system, which caters to courses not necessarily addressing the needs of our economy but other countries.

Dr. Lizette Knight, from a theological seminary in Benguet, shared that maximum learning is obtained through brain-based activity, balanced critical thinking, and creative teaching.

Internationally well known educator Prof. Henry Tenedero shared in the seminar many facilitating learning styles. Tenedero, chair of the Center for Learning and Teaching Styles in the Philippines, will sponsor an international training on styles in learning in Baguio City with speakers from at least 12 countries.

The three speakers encouraged analytical and critical learning as a means to break the traditional learning styles.

Meanwhile, Marina I. Sagandoy, a faculty from the Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC), shared methods in assessing student participation in different activities. The input served as a guide for the participants to adopt assessment methods in their teaching.

To appreciate the methodologies, four teachers from the different departments of BSU had a “teaching demonstration” using different methodologies, teaching aids based on the level of their students.

The seminar was sponsored by BSU in coordination with the Commission on Higher Education of the Cordillera (CHED-CAR) and the Professional Association for Teacher Education of the Cordillera (PAFTE-CAR). # Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS
