Insumix on the go at Bila, Bauko, Mt. Province

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 12) — Aside from being known for its nationally acclaimed quality fruit wines, Brgy. Bila of Bauko, Mt. Province also prides with Insumix, a type of home-prepared baby food.

With their aim of providing mothers with cheap but nutritious food for their babies, Bila Mother’s Organization is continuing with the production of insumix.

According to association president Helen Yapes, insumix is a mixture of ground rice, mongo and sesame seeds. Yapes explained that it is as good as or even better than the branded commercially produced baby food since it is rich in carbohydrates, fats and protein essential for the growth of infants.

Furthermore, Yapes added that insumix is also good for bed-ridden adults explaining that it provides complete dietary requirements and is easily digested as well.

However, Zenaida Patal-e, a nurse and member of the organization, said that insumix is good only for babies six months old and above.

To market their products, Patal-e said the association does the packaging and retailing. There are those who purchase through orders and outlets.

A 200 gram packet of insumix costs only P20. Patal-e further said that a package would last for 6 months if it is sealed and stored well.

Insumix production was introduced at Bila in 1994 by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) as a project to combat malnutrition. That time, Bila was its pilot area so in turn the pioneers taught it at Sumadel, Tadian and Besao. However, they were not interested to continue with its mass production. Fortunately, Sagada, a nearby municipality of Besao got interested and decided to venture in it.

To date, Bila and Sagada are supplying the P1 million feeding project of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to day care centers in Bontoc, Sagada and Bauko as the pilot areas of the said project.

Brgy. Bila supplies Bauko and Bontoc, while Sagada supplies the municipality’s constituents. # Florence Batawang/UP intern for NORDIS
