Times Transit workers want SC decision implemented

VIGAN CITY (Dec. 29) — After eight years, workers belonging to Times Employees Union (TEU-NAFLU-KMU) recently won their case as the Supreme Court ruled they are entitled for accrued salaries and separation pay. They call for the Times Transit Company to give its financial obligation denied to the workers four years before they were removed from work in 1997.

The case was brought by the workers to the NLRC (National Labor relation Commission) but reached the Supreme Court where it decided in 2005 in favor of the workers.

Calling for the Times management to respect the SC decision, the workers picketed the Dominion Bus Terminal for their claims.

It was learned from leaders of the TEU that the Dominion Bus bought Times Transit when the latter allegedly went bankrupt in 1997. They however added that the owner of Dominion, Virginia Mendoza, is the daughter of Santiago Nondaris, the owner of the Times.

According to a union member, TEU won its battle in the court against the management of Times Transit, but they haven’t received a single centavo from them.

Honorio Arcaina, president of the TEU said that an estimated P130 million is due to workers of Times in accrued salaries and separation pay.

Arcaina stressed that amid the delaying tactics of the management, the union shall continue to forward its struggle until the workers attain justice from all the damages that the management has committed against the workers.

A noise barrage concluded the said picket to call the attention of the management to give them what is due and to call for support to the people in their struggle.

The struggle of TEU began in 1997 after the management declared that Times Transit Company Inc, bankrupt. That same year, the members of TEU led series of pickets after management denied them of their wages, back pay and job security. # Rod Tajon for NORDIS
