Business permit renewal simplified BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 6) — Mayor Braulio Yaranon last week issued Administrative Order No. 326 enforcing a simpler method for processing of the renewal of business permits by lessening the documents required. In his order, the mayor said that effective January 1, the business permit applicants only need to secure a clearance from the city’s treasurer’s office, certification of payment of taxes, sanitary permit and certification of attendance to the seminar on character for bars, amusement centers, billiard, computers with games, video and liquor dispensing establishments. The mayor said the city no longer requires certifications from the city Environment and Parks management office, City Fire Department and City building and Architect’s Office. In lieu of the requirements, the city will instead furnish the said offices with the list of all business establishments issued new and renewed permits on a monthly basis and these offices will be required to conduct inspection of listed establishments to make sure that these have been complying with existing ordinance and regulations # Aileen P. Lectures on self-breast examination will also be conducted at the various barangay health centers. Pap smear is used for the early detection of cervical cancer while self-breast examination is used to detect lumps in the breast, which can be signs and symptoms of breast cancer. Breast and cervix cancer are among the most common cancer in the country. Treatment and management of cancer include surgery, cobalt radiation (chemotherapy) and other alternative medicines recognized by the Philippine Society of Oncologists. # Art Killip/PIO * * * DepEd plan to convert portions of teachers camp as relocation site suspended BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 6) — The Department of Education (DepEd) is asking the city government to put on hold plans to convert portions of Teachers Camp reservation into relocation or housing site to protect government-owned structures that will be affected by the proclamation. The conversion is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 613 series of 2004 that declares a portion of the reservation as relocation or housing site. In a letter to Mayor Braulio Yaranon, Camilo Miguel Montesa, DepEd officer-in-charge of the undersecretary for legal affairs said several government buildings located within the area are expected to be affected if the provision of the proclamation will be implemented. Yaranon referred the matter to Councilor Faustino Olowan who chairs the council committee on urban planning, lands and housing and who serves as action officer of the Local Inter-Agency Committee. # Aileen P. The mayor denied the request of QM subdivision resident Danilo Garcia for an endorsement of his application with the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to set up a lotto outlet. Garcia said the mayor’s endorsement was required by the PCSO to support his application for a license to operate a lotto outlet where he said he intends to employ disabled persons. However, the mayor refused saying that although Garcia’s purpose to employ disabled persons “is noble,” the city cannot endorse the setting up of another lotto station because the city charter prevents approval of more lotto outlets. Yaranon who is known for his vehement stance against gambling has led in campaigns to stamp out bingo, casino, jueteng and lotto in the city. The city council in 2002 also approved a resolution presented by the lotto probe ad hoc committee then created and headed by Councilor Edilberto Tenefrancia, which expresses the long standing sentiment of the Baguio citizenry that gambling is inimical to the public interest and is contrary to public welfare. # Aileen P.
