BSU to promote organic farming

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Jan. 6) — The Benguet State University (BSU) on its 20th charter anniversary is intensifying its campaign to promote organic agriculture in line with its dream to become the first organic university in South Asia.

BSU President Rogelio Colting during the first Kapihan sa Benguet for 2006 said they would promote organic agriculture to everybody not just to farmers. He added that they would make organic agriculture a way of life for the whole BSU community and hopefully the whole region.

BSU Dean of the College of Agriculture Marlene Atinyao disclosed that there are already efforts and researches on organic farming in BSU. She added that BSU is maintaining the Seven Healing Garden, where organic agriculture technology was applied. She said the garden was planted with different plants like herbs, fruits and vegetables.

Marcelo Abela one of the proponents of organic agriculture in the region said organic farming is seen as an alternative for Cordillera vegetable farmers who were hurt by the influx of cheap imported vegetables ushered in by the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Abela claimed that there is already a viable market for organic vegetables since the rich are becoming more health conscious. He added that with organic farming, farmers would be spared from the soaring prices of farm inputs because they would not need them anymore.

Abela also mentioned that organic farming is not new to the Cordillera because Cordillera ancestors practiced organic agriculture in the olden days.

In addition, Gerry Laboyan also a proponent of organic agriculture said organic farming is not only good for the health but also for the environment. He added that organic agriculture needs unpolluted air, water soil and conscious people.

Laboyan said many scientific studies confirmed that health problems are mainly due to food intake. He further said that people should avoid food products with too much chemicals.

As part of BSU’s efforts to promote organic agriculture, it will hold the first Cordillera Organic Agriculture Congress on January 13 to 14 at the BSU campus. # Kim Quitasol for NORDIS
