GMA orders relocation of Banaue “informal settlers”

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 4) — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (PGMA) instructed Banaue and Department of Tourism (DoT) officials to resettle “informal settlers” within the Banaue Rice Terraces area this year in her visit to the Cordilleras during the holiday season.

In the first weekly Kapihan sa Baguio for 2006 held at Ridgewood Hotel here, DOT Regional Director Pura Molintas said that PGMA discussed with them the resettlement project of the people living in the view deck of the Rice Terraces for aesthetic purposes.

Molintas pointed out that these people are called “informal settlers” because there are no squatters in the Cordillera. She explained that most of the people here have inherited their lands from their ancestors but only few people were given land titles. She added that the land generally belongs to the Cordillera Forest Reserves.

Molintas added that Banaue Mayor Gerry Dalipug already coordinated with Ifugao Congressman Solomon Chungalao and identified an initial four-hectare area within Awan-igid until the viewpoint area of Banaue for the program. There are more or less 200 families that will be relocated. The road construction will start this month to open up the resettlement area.

Molintas also said that the houses will be patterned after the traditional Ifugao house to preserve the culture that will attract more tourists in the place.

Meanwhile PGMA also visited Kabayan, home of the world famous Philippine mummy, where she instructed DOT to transfer the Kabayan Museum to the Department of Education (DepEd). At present, all museums are under the supervision and care of the DepEd.

In Sagada, PGMA instructed the reopening and transfer of management of the Mt. Data Hotel in Bauko, Mt. Province to the provincial government.

The DOT is now looking for a link to other international airports, working with private sectors and promoting Cordillera in International Travel Fairs. # Ma. Katherin Joy del Rosario with reports from Rhea Urbano/UP Interns for NORDIS
