Ilocos youth hits GMA for lack of jobs |
||
VIGAN CITY (Jan. 2) — Ilocos youth and students lambasted Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for the increase in the unemployment and underemployment rate in 2005 despite her claims that her administration was able to generate two million jobs. The National Statistics Office (NSO) in its latest quarterly Labor Force Survey reported that unemployment rate in October 2005 jumped to 7.4 percent from the 2.6 percent in the same period in 2004. Underemployment also went up to 21.2 percent from the 16.9 percent in 2004. According to the NSO report, unemployment and underemployment increased because available jobs cannot compensate the increase in the labor force. It also indicated that 48.4 percent of the unemployed are 15 to 24 years old, an indication that they are new high school or college graduates. Albert Lagrimas of Student Christian Movement of the Philippines (SCMP)-Ilocos said that every year, the number of graduates continuously increases but there are no job opportunities. “The government admits the fact that they cannot provide adequate number of jobs for graduates, thus pushing them to work abroad to earn dollars. In fact, out of three graduates, only one of them will land on a decent job, the other one will go abroad, and the other one will be underemployed,” he noted. Lagrimas also cited that GMA’s two million jobs are merely lip service to save her administration from the worsening political and economic crisis and to pacify the people calling for her removal. “While the GMA boasts that she has created over a million jobs and lifted our Gross National Product (GNP), it should be reiterated that these were brought about by mushrooming number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW).” Lagrimas pointed out. He furthered said that the people should not be mislead by government statistics. He added that the Filipino people could not have a decent life under the regime of an anti-people, corrupt, fascist and puppet president. # Rod Tajon for NORDIS Post your comments, reactions to this article |
