A different Christmas celebration BAUANG, La Union (Dec. 19) — Yearly, the workers of the Bauang Power Plant Corporation-Employees Union (BPPC Site-EU-NAFLU-KMU) organize a Christmas party for the benefit of the members of the union. This year however, not only the members of the union were invited, but also the peasants, fisher folk, youth, women and human rights workers. With the theme, “Reaching the basic sectors for unity and cooperation,” more than 50 participants attended the said Christmas party. In the first part of the activity, various sectors shared their present situation and how they are affected by the anti-people policies of the present Arroyo regime. Avelino Dacanay of STOP-EXPLOITATION discussed the plight of peasants in the Ilocos region. Ka Tony of TIMEK discussed the situation of the fisher folk in La Union. Jude Bago of the Cordillera Human Rights Alliance (CHRA) meanwhile discussed the present human rights situation in the country. Raffle draw for union members and discussion on the situation of the BPPC site-EU-NAFLU-KMU took place in the afternoon. According to Engr. Eduardo Rimando, the union president, over the past years, BPPC-EU conducts Christmas parties, not only to celebrate the season, but also to celebrate the victories of the union and to know the present situation of the Filipino people through the sharing of different organizations. “Thus, this program is aimed at reaching out to the basic sectors, to serve as an inspiration for us to carry forward more victories not only for us, but for the people in general,” he noted. # Rod Tajon for NORDIS |
