Cordilleran new VP for SEA of int’l NGO for community radio

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 1) — Gwendolyn Longid of Sagada Community Radio (CR) was elected as the new vice president of world association of community radio broadcasters (AMARC) for South East Asia region on November 27 in Jakarta in Indonesia.

More than 200 community radio broadcasters all over the Asia Pacific participated in the said assembly.

Recognizing her potentials and skills, Longid was nominated by the delegates from Indonesia. According to them she (Longid) is capable to take the post because of her bright ideas. They added that in this repressive time, the media broadcasters need to be organized and unite to pressure the concerned ones to take actions and implement laws protecting the right to expression, and Longid can be a great help considering her bounty experience here in the Philippines. For this, delegates from South East Asia region agreed upon her nomination and nobody oppose her. She was unopposed.

Meanwhile, Asish Sen of Voices from India received overwhelming votes to win the AMARC Asia Pacific presidency over Kuku Sanyoto of Studies and Consultation on Communication for Democracy from Indonesia. To complete the new board, Sonia Randhawa of Center for Independent Journalism fron Malaysia was elected as the new Deputy vice-president, treasurer is Shane Elson of Community Broadcasters Association from Australia while Matsuusa Tetsuo of Kyoto Community Radio in Japan and Sharon Bhagwan of Rolls Femlink Pacific was elected as the new vice-president for East Asia and South Asia region respectively.

Gwen Longid and this writer flew to Indonesia on Nov 23. Another compatriot, Mr. Roberto Versola of Philippine Green who served as resource speaker in the first day. He discussed community radio, the ICTRD challenge and GATS.

Created in 1983, AMARC is an international non-government organization serving the interest of community radio. To date, AMARC links more than 3,000 community radios in over 110 countries worldwide.

AMARC aims to raising the awareness and strengthening the engagement of community radio in civil society. It helps to mobilize the community radio movement in different campaigns for peace, social justice, protection of women, children, youth, minorities and indigenous people’s right.
