22 gunshot wounds killed HR worker

Militants blame GMA, AFP for liquidation

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 1) — Twenty-two gun shot wounds riddled the body of Jose Manegdeg III, the Ilocos-Cordillera coordinator of the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines (RMP), an organization of church workers nationwide established during the Marcos dictatorship.

Still unknown assailants killed Manegdeg on November 28, in San Esteban, Ilocos Sur. (Please refer to the main story.)

The cause of his death was loss of blood due to multiple gun shot wounds, according to an autopsy conducted by Dr. Annie A. De Guzman, municipal health officer of San Esteban.

The killers of Menegdeg allegedly used caliber .45, according to the police blotter in San Esteban and staff of human rights organizations in Ilocos region, who saw empty shells in the scene of the crime.

The autopsy result, external gun shot wounds registered on Manegdeg’s body were those on his left check, left upper portion of the neck, mid-clavicular area, left lower portion of the scrotum, the upper legs and the buttocks.

The internal findings show that there are two lacerated wounds on his lungs, two lacerations on his liver, 9 lacerated wounds on his stomach, and a lacerated wound on his descending colon.

Medical practitioners consulted by NORDIS claimed that the above external findings and the wounds on the lungs and liver were fatal wounds. These (wounds) always result to death, they added.

Dr. Ana Leung of the Cordillera Health Education, Services and Training in the Cordillera Region (CHESTCORE) said however that the autopsy report did not indicate which wounds were the entry and exit points of the bullets.

“Massive loss of blood secondary to multiple gunshot wounds caused his death,” Leung said interpreting the autopsy report.

Human rights organizations in the Ilocos and Cordillera regions theorized that the 22 gunshot wounds ensured his death.

De Guzman conducted the autopsy at 2:30 P.M. on November 29 in San Esteban. # Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS
