Poverty downs enrolment

BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 18) — Representatives from the different universities and colleges sees poverty as a reason for the steady drop of enrolment during the second semester in the Cordillera. A decline in enrolment during the second semester is a normal phenomenon, the representatives said.

Imelda Buenafe of Abra State Institute of Science and Technology (ASIST) said the second semester is usually harvest time in Abra and most students help in the fields during this time, thus explaining the drop in enrolment.

“We should also understand that Abra is one of the 20 poorest provinces in the country,” she stressed.

Feliciano Calora of Benguet State University (BSU) said enrolment this second semester dropped by 5% because some students cannot support their studies anymore.

Dr. Carmelita Filart noted that generally there was a drop in enrolment except for nursing in Baguio Central University (BCU) this semester. She agreed that some parents are already hard up that many students did not enroll this semester.

Representatives of the University of the Cordilleras (UC), AMA Computer College (AMA), Apayao State University also testified that there is a drop in enrolment in their respective schools this second semester.

UC’s Dr. Domingo attributes the drop of enrolment to irregular students who graduate during the 1st semester not replaced in the following semester.

Jerber Luy of UC’s Democratic Party for the Youth (Dap-ay) said economic consideration is the primary reason why many students fail to enroll during the second semester.

“It is harder for us from UC because of the trimester system. We have to pay our tuition three times a year and expenses are non-stop. Our parents cannot break free from arduously looking for money to sustain our education,” he explained in Filipino.

Luy further said that students are really forced to stop schooling and work instead to save up for their studies.

Easter Colleges Incorporated, however, maintained its enrolment rate this semester. # Kim Quitasol for NORDIS
