KBP faces challenges of serving the nation

BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 12) — With its theme “Serving the Nation”, the 31st top-level management conference of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) reeled off not only for seasoned broadcasters and representatives of the country’s top broadcast networks but also for other sections of the Philippine media.

With its reputation in self-regulation, KBP came up with its own Radio and Television Code of the Philippines, which has been recognized by the government. It also works for the promotion of press freedom, the protection of broadcasters, and the promotion of Filipino identity.

Broadcast Media’s Role in Governance and legal and regulatory issues in block time programs were some of the interesting topics at the plenary sessions, where Jess Estanislao of the Institute for Solidarity in Asia and Ronaldo Solis were invited as speakers.

As part of the conference, the break-up session on journalism in times of political crises featured top journalism institutions as Luis Teodoro, Vergel Santos and Sheila Coronel as lecturers and critics. Teodoro, who talked on Philippine Media and Politics, is Manila Standard Today columnist, and is presently with the UP College of Mass Communications. Santos talked on Principles for Attaining Excellence in News and How to Make them Work. He authored a journalism textbook, Newswriting Formula, and will launch a new book “Worse than free” on Nov. 23. Coronel leads the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism. She tackled Uncovering and Presenting the Truth behind Controversial Political Issues.

Students and teachers from mass communications schools also participated. Aside from Manila-based schools, the University of the Cordilleras, here, sent students to the media affair.

Another forum, Improving Radio Sales, had representatives from multi-national companies as Gerald Bautista, director for Client Service of the Nielsen Media Research; Alex Fernandez, vice-president for Consumer Health of the United Laboratories (UNILAB); and Rolando Sulit, Station Manager of WAVE 89.1 and Operations Manager of JAM 88.3. They talked on The State of Radio, What your Clients want to See in your Proposals, and How to sell even if you’re not No. 1, respectively.

Other break-up sessions carried topics as successful radio formats; updating radio station technology the profitable way; and career opportunities in broadcasting.

KBP was organized in April 1973 almost eight months after then Pres. Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law. To date, it is made up of 150 member organizations operating more than 147 television stations and more than 700 radio stations throughout the country. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was the keynote speaker. (Please see related article) # Lyn V. Ramo for NORDIS
