Mayor orders removal of illegal sewers

BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 21) — Mayor Braulio Yaranon last week issued Administrative Order No. 206, which ordered the removal of all illegal connections into the drainage system at the central busines district and along other city roads.

Yaranon, in his order said many establishments and residences with illegal connections emit reeking smell that causes pollution and health hazard to the public.

The office of the city environment and parks management to be assisted by the city engineer’s office. The team members will include representatives from the offices of the city building official, health, legal and the Baguio City Engineering District Office.

Erring owners of buildings with illegal sewer connections will face penalties, which include imprisonment not exceeding six months or a fine of not exceeding P1,000 or both. # Aileen P. Refuerzo/PIO

City offers incentives anew for responsible taxpayers

BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 21) — The city government allotted P400,000 as incentives for responsible taxpayers to ecourage them to pay as early as January 02, 2006.

All real property owners and business operators who paid their taxes with no delinquencies on December 31, and pay their taxes in full for the whole of 2006 would qualify for the program.

Taxpayers must proceed to the one-stop-shop building, after paying and present an official receipt for a chance to spin the roleta to win raffle items.There would also be 1,000 prizes to be given away.

Taxpayers could also enjoy tax discounts on real property taxes if they pay in full on the following cut off dates: January 1 to 31 for a 20% discount; February 1 to 28 for a 15% discount; March 1 to 31 for a 10% discount. # Jerry Guevara/PIO

DENR warns residents on unstable ground

BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 21) — Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Deparment of Environment and Natural Resources (MGB-DENR) regional office warned residents not to touch natural drainage systems and sinkholes because these are unstable.

Benjie Espejo of the geology division of the MGB-CAR said there are barangays in the city identified as critical areas because these lie on limestone rock formation, which is an unstable base susceptible to both physical and chemical weathering and deformation.

These barangays include Dominican Hill, Crystal Cave, Irisan, the whole City Camp lagoon area, Quezon Hill, Buyog watershed and Dreamland Subdivision.

In response, the mayor alerted the offices of the city environment and parks management, city building and architecture and engineer against issuing any permit for building and development on said areas.

The mayor also approved the allocation of a P1 million budget for the conduct of a geological hazard study to pinpoint the various geologically hazardous areas in the city and come up with suitable remedial measures. # Aileen P. Refuerzo/PIO

Dads back mayor on satellite market plan

BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 21) — The city council last Monday approved Mayor Braulio Yaranon’s request to help facilitate the implementation of the plan to construct a satellite market at Mines View Park here.

The satellite market project was first identified as a priority project by former mayor Bernardo Vergara.

Yaranon agreed that the project is crucial to address the uncontrolled proliferation of vendors at the area which is one of the city’s popular tourist attractions. # Aileen P. Refuerzo/PIO

CESU warns public vs. diseases

BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 21) — The epidemiological surveillance unit (CESU) of the city government is reminding residents to practice precautionary measures against the emerging and re-emerging cholera, typhoid fever, dengue fever, meningoccemia, and bird flu.

CESU data showed that between September 17 and October 14 this year, there were 5 cholera cases with one fatality in the city. The data also mentioned that patients were between 4 and 80 years old.

From January to August 30, there were 367 typhoid fever cases reported. And from October 3, 2004 to September 24, 2005, there were 154 confirmed meningo cases, where 43 persons died, based on the reports gathered from the city’s hospitals. The most affected age group is between 0 to 5 years old, followed by 16 to 20 years old, and 11 to 15 year-olds. An average of 4 cases were admitted weekly. # Art Killip/PIO
