OFW kin, supporters hold mass for justice |

TAGUDIN, Ilocos Sur (Oct. 14) — On October 14, while another court hearing for the case of Guen Aguilar in Singapore is taking place, her family with barriomates, local government representatives and supporters held an ecumenical mass at Barangay Baracbac, here to pray for a fair trial and her safety. Earlier Nordis reported that Guen Garlejo Aguilar, 29, a mother of two, from the said barangay faces murder charges for the death of Jane Parangan La Puebla, also a Filipino maid in Singapore, from Nueva Viscaya. Pastors from the Christ’s Servants Full Gospel Ministry (CSFGM) and the United Church of Christ of the Philippines (UCCP) together with priests from the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) led the ecumenical mass. Guen is a member of the CSFGM. A short program followed the mass, where supporters expressed messages of support for Guen and her family. During the program, Migrante-Cordillera Spokesperson Flora Belinan called on the Singaporean and Philippine government to closely study and conduct comprehensive investigations on Guen’s case. She said her group is also demanding true justice for La Puebla. Belinan also challenged Guen’s family and barriomates to join the struggle for justice not only for Guen but also for all victims of human rights violations. Guen’s relatives and barriomates maintained that she is innocent. As a sign of support, residents of Brgy. Baracbac hold nightly novenas at the Aguilar house to pray for Guen’s safe homecoming. Aguilar’s mother-in-law told Nordis that it is impossible for a person like her to commit such a brutal crime. She added that Guen is a thoughtful and loving person. “How could she (Guen) have killed Jane (La Puebla), mutilate and throw her body parts in different places in Singapore, to think that she (Guen) is a maid. She was even arrested in the middle of the night,” she asked in Ilokano. She added that Guen’s children are too young to understand what their mother is going through now. Guen’s first child is only seven, while the youngest is six. “Since Guen was arrested, the children and my son have been staying with me. When I see Edwin staring blankly, I cannot help but say a prayer that all these would end soon,” she said. Edwin Aguilar, Guen’s husband already left on October 13 for Singapore to attend the said court hearing. # Kim Quitasol for NORDIS |
