DOH tags October children’s month BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 6) — The delivery of essential health services for children is highlighted this month, when October was declared as “Garantisadong Pambata” (GP) and National Children’s Month. GP, a program of the Department of Health, promotes an integrated delivery of health, nutrition and psychological services, and early education to children. It also provides services including vitamin A supplementation, immunization, oral health, among other growth monitoring and nutrition programs. City Health Officer Dr. Florence Reyes said efforts will be maximized to increase vitamin A supplementation coverage and the use of iodized salt and fortified foods. “The assistance of Barangay Health workers and Barangay Nutrition Scholars are vital for the city’s attainment of the goals for children’s health,” Reyes adds. Likewise, the National Children’s Month aims to ensure screening of all babies born in the country. # Art Killip/PIO * * * * * No license for drug testing center BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 6) — The city’s drug testing center under the control of the Baguio Health Department (BHD) requested by City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) through its resolution number 02-01 and supported by an ordinance could not be given license by the Department of Health (DOH). City Health Officer, Dr. Florence Reyes said DOH could not grant the license because the newly constructed BHD building has no occupancy permit for the basement, first and second floors, and the public laboratory located in the basement was not connected to a water supply. She added that the promised computer unit by CADAC still has not been delivered except the computer table. Reyes also claims that all other necessary requirements were in place including the water supply which was conected only last week except the license and computer unit for the Testing Center to be in full operation. # Art Killip/PIO * * * * * Yaranon bares plan vs. illegal PUV franchise BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 6) — Mayor Braulio Yaranon last week bared his plan to bring the problem on the proliferation of illegal vehicle franchises in the city despite a moratorium on the issuance of the same to the attention of the Offices of the President and the Ombudsman. Yaranon said he would file a petition on the matter anytime soon. He also supports the plan of a lawyers’ organization to file a petition against Dept. of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) Regional Director Alfredo Mondiguing over the unabated problem on illegal franchises. Committee Chairperson Councilor Rocky Thomas Balisong earlier blamed Mondiguing’s failure to submit the required documents for the committee’s inability to conduct a full-blown investigation. Also, Councilor Erdolfo Balajadia said the effect of the uncontrolled proliferation of PUVs to the traffic situation and the environment has become so serious that the city needs to unearth its root cause and employ remedial measures as soon as possible. # Aileen P. Refuerzo/PIO * * * * * Yaranon wants AO 114 firm implem BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 6) — Mayor Braulio Yaranon wants a more resolute implementation of Administrative Order (AO) No. 114 series of 2005 that limits the operation of liquor-dispensing establishments in the city. The AO already took effect lst September 11 as a crime prevention measure. Reacting to observations that there are still establishments that violate the order by operating beyond the prescribed time of operation, Yaranon will direct the City Police and the Public Order and Safety Division along with the Anti-Vice Coordinating Task Force to strictly monitor establishments and impose sanctions against violators. Nightclubs, cocktail lounges, beer gardens, bars, duly accredited tourism-oriented firms, bars, discopads and cabarets will be allowed only to operate only from 5P.M. to 2A.M.. Folkhouses, restaurants and coffee shops could operate from 3P.M. to 12M.N. . And ordinary retail stores that either serves liquor consumption within or outside the establishment, could operate from 9A.M. to 9P.M.. For establishments not mentioned in the order like videoke bars, billiards and computer centers, the mandated closing time will be until 9P.M. as provided in the Amusement Ordinance No. 15 series of 2000. # Aileen P. Refuerzo/PIO * * * * * Family Week rites weds 41 pairs BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 6) — Forty one couples were wed during the mass wedding celebrations conducted last Sept. 30 at the Baguio Convention Center as part of the activities for the observance of the National Family Week. The annual project was coordinated by the city government through the City Social Welfare and Development Office. Mayor Braulio Yaranon presided over the solemnization rites punctuated by his inspirational message to the couples. Other city officials led by Rep. Mauricio Domogan and Vice Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. also stood as their sponsors of the couples. They likewise gave their own advice and gifts to the couples. The mass wedding is a localized program of the city lined up relative to the Family week Celebration.# June Bacbac * * * * * 3 Youth groups top quest BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 6) — Three university organizations topped the 1st Search for Outstanding Youth Organizations project of the Rotaract Club of Baguio South (RACBS) and the Rotary Club of Baguio South. The top three groups are the Saint Louis University College of Accountancy and Commerce Ecological Society (CACES), the University of the Philippines Baguio APO Gamma Pi Chapter and the University of the Cordilleras Peer Facilitators. Awarding ceremonies were held last September 30 at the Cooyeesan Hotel Plaza, graced by Mayor Braulio Yaranon and Sangguniang Kabataan Federation Fresident Councilor Leonardo Bayan Jr. The winners received prizes which include trophies, certificates and cash prizes. # Aileen P. Refuerzo * * * * * City lauds e-inquiry for youth BAGUIO CITY(Oct. 6) — Mayor Braulio Yaranon approved a city council resolution commending the population services and social hygiene and skin clinic services of the City Health Services Office and the City Budget Office’s Management Information and Technology Division for giving honor and international recognition to the city for the website “E-inquiry (electronic-inquiry) for the Young People of Baguio”. The website was awarded as one of the Ten Philippine Entries for Best E-practices by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Digital Opportunity Center (ADOC) in the 2005 ADOC Awards Night held last August 5 in Taipei, Taiwan. “The e-inquiry for the young people of Baguio website is dedicated to the city’s young adults to access information on sexual issues and have this as a venue for interaction with the city health experts through electronic fora and mails,” the measure states. # Gaby B. Keith * * * * * City asks Tanods to check on parked vehicles BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 6) — Mayor Braulio Yaranon has approved a city council resolution tasking concerned barangay tanods, in coordination with various city police sub-stations, to conduct ocular inspections within their areas of jurisdiction purposely to identify plate numbers of motor vehicles illegally parked and causing obstruction along roads during night time. These must be submitted to the City Council in aid of legislation. Councilor Daniel Fariñas authored the resoulution. Copies of the approved measure will be furnished to the concerned areas.
