Baguio City declares 30-day fete for Ramadhan |
||
BAGUIO CITY (Sept. 12) — Preparations are under way for the Ramadhan, the ninth month of the year in the Hijrah, the Islamic Calendar. It is the year 1426 and the Islamic community here shall observe a month-long religious fete. The city council here declared October 5 to November 3 or 4 as an Islamic Religious Fete upon the request of a group of Muslims in line with this year’s holy month of Ramadhan. “The city council declaration means a lot to the Muslims in Baguio City,” according to Abe Abdul Salam dela Cruz, secretary-general of the Ramadhan Al Mubarak Committee for this year’s celebration. He said this indicates the city’s recognition of the Muslim community in Baguio City. In a proposed resolution penned by Councilor Elmer O. Datuin, the city council recognized the need to enhance the observance of customs and traditions of the city’s Muslim residents since they form an integral part of the Philippine society. Ramadhan is equivalent to September in the ordinary Gregorian calendar, which like the Hijrah, has 12 months. The Islamic calendar, however, does not have a 31st day in any month and this explains the changing celebration month of the Ramadhan in reference to the Gregorian calendar, Muslim leaders told Nordis in an interview. Ismael Ibrahim, Administrator of this year’s working committee for the Ramadhan, told this Nordis reporter that his group intends to unite and educate the Muslim and non-Muslim community to understand fasting and the practice of observing the Ramadhan. The public will be treated to a display of Islamic religious practices, culture and arts at the People’s Park on October 5, the opening of the month of fasting. Among the religious activities in the People’s Park will be Koran reading, preaching and prayers. In addition, the public will witness the special prayer, tarawih, said only during the Ramadhan, Ibrahim disclosed. Daily lecture-discussions on the Koran will also be aired over local radio stations. Updating on the Ramadhan as observed worldwide will also be announced on television and radio stations, the respondents told Nordis. The fete will close on either Nov. 3 or 4, depending on the next new moon, at the Melvin Jones, here. Abdul Mahaimen Manumbilao chairs this year’s Al Mubarrak Committee. # Lyn V. Ramo for NORDIS |
