Nueva Vizcaya folk ask dads to recall pro-mining reso

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya (Sept. 16) — A multi-sectoral mobilization against impending mining operations of Australasian Philippines Mining Incorporated, formerly Climax Arimco Mining Corporation (CAMC) in nearby Kasibu town gathered some 2,000 on March 14 in a ally that ended with a program at the provincial capitol here. The protesters also demanded the recall of a pro-mining measure by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial board).

The mass action served as the people’s indignation to a recent provincial board resolution endorsing large-scale mining in Nueva Vizcaya. The Sangguniang Kabataan (youth council) of barangay Didipio, purportedly requested the Nueva Vizcaya Board to endorse the mining project.

Rallyists say that 28 out of 30 Kasibu barangays have passed local resolutions urging the Sangguniang Bayan (municipal council) not to endorse the proposed gold and copper mining project in Didipio, and not to allow any large-scale mining activity anywhere in the municipality.

In a statement sent to Nordis, the Alliance of Community Development Advocates on September 7 said that the people do not like mining because they want their citrus orchards to continue bearing fruits, their farms to remain fertile and their rivers clean and free from toxic mine pollutants.

“They want to live their lives in peace and harmony with one another,” the statement read.

The groups said that responsible mining is impossible inside a watershed. # Via NORDIS
