Migrante hits NLRC ruling on OFW case |

BAGUIO CITY (Sept. 2) — Migrante-Metro Baguio is disappointed with the recent decision of the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC)-Cordillera over the case of a distressed overseas Filipino worker (OFW) here. Migrante-MB Spokesperson Flora Belinan disclosed that NLRC recently dismissed a case filed by Marjorie (not her real name) in December 2004 due to simple technicalities. She said that Migrante also appealed for reconsideration twice but NLRC denied them on both occasions. Belinan added that Migrante could still file another appeal at the NLRC Central Office. However, Marjorie is already financially drained because she is now jobless, she said. Marjorie, a commerce graduate of the University of Baguio was not able to find a decent paying job here, thus decided to try her luck abroad. She was able to borrow money for her placement fee to Taiwan and on August 18, 2004, she flew to to become a domestic helper in Taiwan. However, after 18 days her employer sent her back to the Philippines saying she was no longer fit to work. Her employer also forced her to sign a quitclaim, which stated that she voluntarily wanted to come home. According to Belinan, Marjorie sprained her ankle in Taiwan but was still able to do her job well, contrary to her employer’s claim. “All she wanted was to get back the money she spent for her placement fee but our justice system is giving her a hard time. The government failed to provide her a decent job now she is faced with a judicial system that is expensive and unfair,” Belinan said in Filipino. # via NORDIS |
