Olowan backs Mayor Yaranon

BAGUIO CITY (Aug 31) — City Councilor Faustino Olowan urges urban poor leaders to allow Mayor Braulio Yaranon to finish his term instead of supporting the recall movement, which would add another problem to the ongoing crisis affecting the country.

“Let the mayor finish his term and let us help him pursue his programs to address the problems of our city,” Olowan said during the land congress today at the Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary here.

Olowan, chairman of the City Council’s Committee on Urban Planning and Land Use, added that the recall serves as a barrier to Yaranon’s institution of reforms.

Some cause–oriented groups in the city believe the recall as a handiwork of corporate groups whose interests have been run over by the pro-people reforms Yaranon introduced.

The congress, held on August 31 and September 1 was sponsored by ORNUS (Organisasyon Dagiti Nakurapay nga Umili iti Siyudad), with member organizations in the more than half of the 129 barangays in the city classified as urban poor areas.

Meanwhile, Olowan urges the urban poor leaders to be active in raising their issues to the city council for its action. # Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS
