Abra folk seek redress |

LACUB, Abra (Aug. 31) — Residents of this Abra town appealed to the commanding officer of the 41st Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army (IB PA) to act on the alleged butchering of a cow by the soldiers who reportedly camped out recently in sitio Libsong in Brgy. Guiguinabang, here. In a letter to the radio station DZPA that the residents furnished NORDIS, they recounted how one of the local folk saw soldiers butchering something on August 27, one day after the soldiers arrived in the sitio. They said the unnamed witness immediately informed the residents but they could not verify the news at once because elders advised them not to go near the military camp for fear that the erring soldiers might get back at them. When the soldiers left the place, on August 29, some residents found the carcass, skin, head and feet of the butchered animal thrown into a deep ravine. The cow belonged to a barangay council member. The Libsong letter stated that the residents could not understand why soldiers who were supposed to be the guardians of the people are doing these kinds of atrocities. “Apay a dakayo pay a makunkuna a salaknib ti ili ti agar-aramid ti kinadamsok ken kinaranggas a naikontra iti sibilyan?” the letter said in part. They specified that a certain Col. De Leon, alleged commander of the 41st IB PA should act on their complaint as they anticipate more abuse to ensue. # Via NORDIS |
