Cordillera book garners award
BAGUIO CITY (Sept. 2) — Japanese Pioneers in the Northern Philippine Highlands: A Centennial Tribute, 1903-2003 will receive an award on Sunday, Sept. 4, as part of the International Book Fair at the Philippine World Trade Center. Alfred Yuson, columnist and book-writer himself, described the book as a fine example of how a centennial book ought to be. He said it is full of facts and narratives, superbly structured and written, rife with oral histories and warm-hearted accounts, and also makes us sigh for the pristine views, sights and album collection on groups of historic people that the book pays tribute to. The book, published by the Abong, the Philippine Japanese Association of Northern Philippines, garnered the award for the category Historical Publication. Carlos D. Teraoka, representing the publisher, will receive the award. Manila Critics Circle, in coordination with the National Book Development Board and the National Commission on Culture and the Arts has been giving the book awards yearly since 1982. Five Cordillera writers, including its editor, Patricia Okubo Afable, Kathleen Okubo, Geraldine Fiag-oy, Ann Loreto Tamayo and Cecille O. Afable contributed some chapters to the centennial book. Erlyn Ruth Alcantara is layout artist. Yuson said of Patricia who is also book director that “Patricia’s skill at research manifests itself in this book’s comprehensive treatment, including invaluable back-of-the-book data such as “A Chronology of Japanese Settlement in the Northern Philippine Highlands” and a full appendix listings of early Japanese residents, second generation and third generation Japanese-Filipino descendants in the Cordillera region. This year’s awards selection committee is headed by book-writer Ophelia Alcantara-Dimalanta. Members include Virgilio Almario (UP); Juaniyo Arcellana (UST, PDI); Cirilo Bautista (DLSU, Manila Bulletin); Miguel A. Bernardo,SJ (Phil. Star); Isagani R. Cruz ( FEU, Phil.
