KMU assails Benguet Fiscal, Municipal Court

BAGUIO CITY (Sept. 3) —The Kilusang Mayo Uno-Cordilera (KMU-Cordillera) assails the Benguet Provincial Prosecutor’s Office and the Municipal Trial Circuit Court (MCTC) of Mankayan, Benguet for allegedly concocting cases to silence the legitimate strike of the workers’ union of the Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company (LCMCo).

NORDIS learned that the Prosecutor’s Office issued resolutions for grave coercion and direct assaults against members of the striking Lepanto Employees Union (LEU). The cases arose from the complaints filed by the Philippine National Police-Benguet (PNP).

KMU claimed that those charged were actually victims of police brutalities and they had expected the law to work in favor of the victims but it was the other way instead.

In substantiating their accusations against the PNP, KMU claimed that members of the 1064th Provincial Mobile Group of the Benguet PNP dragged Francisco Dida, Danilo Fag-ayan and others in one of the early morning dispersals by the PNP. Dida and Fag-ayan were allegedly brought to Camp Dennis Molintas in Buguias instead of the Mankayan jail.

KMU further narrated that Mankayan Police Chief Edward Aquintey punched Lepanto worker Jerry Takinan on the face while PNP Superintendent Brent Madjaco slapped Dida on the head while countless workers were detained without formal charges in the past. NORDIS learned that Dida, Fag-ayan, and Takinan are among those charged with direct assault. Among those charged with grave coercion are Gerardo Chopchopen, Regino Ginpac, Haig Mangaoang, Dionbong Saldo, Jeremias Macuroy, Florence As-il and unnamed others.

KMU claimed that Madjaco and Col. Ernesto Gaab should be the ones charged and reprimanded as they shoved, pushed, dragged and beat the workers, including the women and their children. “The PNP led by Madjaco and Gaab bow to whatever the Lepanto company orders them to do as they carry out dispersals without official mission orders,” ended the KMU statement released to media. # Via NORDIS
