60th WWII victory day celebration

KIANGAN, Ifugao (Aug. 23) — With less than a week left before the celebration of the 60th Victory Day anniversary that ended World War II on September 2, 2005, Kiangan town officials and the provincial government here are working double time to finalize the program of activities for this historical occasion.

The celebration will be held at the Philippine War Memorial Shrine in Poblacion, Kiangan. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will be the Guest of Honor, along with members of the diplomatic corps and veterans from the different parts of the country.

Among the activities lined up for the commemoration, include a war memento exhibit, trade fair and cultural concert.

The province will also host the Joint Cordillera Regional Development Council (RDC) and Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) meeting which will be presided by President Arroyo.

Despite budget constraints, Kiangan Mayor Albert Indunan said they will do everything to make this successful. This is the first time the province is hosting the joint RDC-RPOC meeting. He said P100,000 has been allotted for the activity, P70,000 of which was provided by the province and P30,000 by the host municipality of Kiangan.

Key focus area on prime educational center

BAGUIO CITY (Aug. 26) — The Cordillera region continues to affirm its stature as a prime education center, as shown by education indicators particularly at the higher education level.

Enrollment in tertiary education in the region increased performance in board/licensure examinations remained high. Accreditation of programs of higher education institutions in the Cordillera was maintained and enrollment of foreign students increased. These, among others, indicate that the region continues to be the leading educational center of northern Luzon.

Total enrolment in higher education in the region increased in SY 2004-2005 by 4.6 percent from the previous school year [from 90,792 in SY 2003-2004 to 94,992 in SY 2004-2005]. More than two-thirds of the regions college enrollments are in Baguio City, 70 percent of these are non-Baguio residents and come from other regions. Foreign students, mostly Koreans and Americans, likewise continue to pursue their education in Baguio City.

The region continues to consistently register an outstanding performance in board/licensure examinations administered by the Professional Regulations Commission, namely in the fields of Nursing, Architecture, Engineering and Criminology. Across regions CAR had the most outstanding performance in board/licensure exams for the period 1993-1998 with an Overall Performance Rating (OPR) of 47% and no zero-performing schools. In 2002, CAR had 42 topnotchers in various exams including the bar examinations.

Presently, five higher education institutions (HEIs) are recognized as Centers of Excellence (COEs) or Centers of Development (CODs). COEs include BSU – Agriculture; SLU – Teacher Education & Nursing, CODs: BCF/UC – Information Technology & Sanitary Engineering; SLU – Business, Architecture, Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, Industrial, Mechanical); UP-Baguio – Biology, Math, Physics; and UB – Sanitary Engineering. In terms of accreditation, six HEIs in the region have accredited courses from level I to level III with BCF – 4 courses with level II accreditation, 1 course with level I accreditation; DWCB – 3 courses with level II accreditation; SLU – 4 courses with level III accreditation & 3 courses with level II accreditation; UB – 12 courses with level II re-accreditation & 3 courses with level II accreditation; BSU – 6 courses with level III re-accreditation & 3 courses with level II accreditation; and MPSPC – 1 course with level II re-accreditation.

Majority of the HEIs in CAR are striving to upgrade their educational level by seeking accreditation of their various degree programs.

Eight schools in CAR presently have international linkages with colleges, universities and institutions in Asia, America and Europe for students and faculty exchange programs as well as on-the-job training. These are BCU, BCF/UC, Easter College, MPSPC, SLU, STI College Baguio, UB and UP-Baguio. # NEDA – CAR via NORDIS
