Pilot composting plant in Baguio eyed

BAGUIO CITY (Aug. 12) — A P300,000 composting facility for Baguio barangays will soon realize an efficient waste management model for some 20 district coordinators who signed up and chose Brgy. Lourdes Extension here as a pilot project site.

The barangay’s present shredding equipment will soon be beefed up with a composter and a screener to complete the equipment required for the composting plant.

Lourdes Extension was chosen as the site not only because of its ideal location but also because its punong barangay, Ruffy Narcida is a mechanical engineer.

Baguio City Mayor Braulio D. Yaranon last week endorsed the project to the City Development Council for its inclusion in the next year’s budget priorities.

The city generates some 270 to 300 tons of solid waste daily that the city has invited investors in waste management schemes to either transform waste into reusable energy such as fuel, electricity and other by-products for government use. Yaranon also expects economic and social impact in terms of cleaner environment and rehabilitation of the dumpsite as an integral part of the waste management project. # Aileen P. Refuerzo/PIO
