City creates body to study options for Asin mini-hydros |

BAGUIO CITY (Aug. 12) — Mayor Braulio D. Yaranon last week created a task force to study the best possible options for the operation of the state-owned Asin mini-hydroelectric plants. The task force has up to February 28, 2006 to submit its report to pave the way to a more extensive legislative deliberation on the future of the mini-hydros. The body chaired by Yaranon is tasked to promulgate policies, rules and regulations to guide the city in establishing management and operations schemes most advantageous for the said power plants. At present the four Asin mini-hydroelectric plants are being operated by the Hydroelectric Development Corporation (HEDCORP which was commissioned earlier in 1992 by the Baguio Water District (BWD), which managed it since 1981. The 25-year contract with the BWD expires in September next year and is up for renewal for another 25 years should the city decides on its renewal. Yaranon had earlier pressed preference for the city government to take charge of the operations. In March 2001, a revised agreement was forged between the BWD, the HEDCOR and the city government. It was not confirmed by the city council, however. Two of these plants are in Brgy. Tadiangan, one in Kennon Road and one in Brgy. Nangalisan, all in Tuba, Benguet. # Aileen P. Refuerzo/PIO |
